I think this has been discussed on here before but I never really got the understanding why this track closed. Unfortunately, I never attended a race there as in that time I had quit the dirt track scene for a while. Ive seen youtube videos of it and the track looked great. Fast, high banked and good racing. I have been by it one time years ago and it is out in the absolute boonies. I'm struggling to understand why a facility such as this that seemed to have a lot of promise would meet an untimely demise in such a quick time period. Somebody put a lot of money and time into that place and obviously meant for it to be something special. I've heard people complaining about mosquitoes (lol) as being a big problem. I would think the owner/developer would have already known that. I also think that with the casinos being around the area was a major reason it was built there but why so far out from the casinos unless it was a noise issue? I just can't understand why somebody doesn't build a first class facilty like this or The Mag closer to central ms.

I don't know all the full details but car counts, location & competing with other tracks seemed to be the issue..

I made about 5-6 trips there including All Stars & WoO and let me tell you what..the mosquito's would literally harass you to death even with Off on..and I grew up in the delta around rice fields Shocked

I went out there one time myself while I was in Memphis for a USCS show at the Ditch. Ironically is was opening that day as Goodbuddy Speedway, so the gates were open and they were there working. We were able to go right up to the fence and look at the track. I must say that this is/was a very impressive place. We were impressed by the track itself and the nice grandstands and catch fences. I immediately wanted to see a sprint car show on it.

One thing I will say is how long it took us to get out there. Even from the casinos in Tunica it seemed like it took forever to get out there. I'm not sure what all of the factors were in it's demise. One of the most successful dirt tracks in this country is Eldora, and as I understand it that one's in the middle of nowhere too. One thing I do know for sure is that I'd like to pick Delta Bowl up from where it is and plop it down somewhere near the Dallas area. We've got Devils Bowl at .425 miles and another five cookie cutter quarter miles. Having a nice track that size running sprints would make a good compliment to Devils Bowl.

From the Hernando exit off I-55 it was still closer to the Ditch than to Delta Bowl.

Another thing..I'm all for keeping drunk drivers off the road but at least 2 of my visits we had to wait thru sobriety checks on the 1 highway out of there...they had the traffic backed up big time..at this point that becomes harassment of the patrons Mad

Unfortunately that happens to a lot of racing facilities that are out in the boondocks. I did think of El Dora being out in the middle of nowhere when I posted this but people come to it big time. The ol saying "build it and they will come" apparently didn't apply to delta bowl. Going back 40 years there just hasn't been much of a super facility racetrack in the jxn area other than Byram. It's heyday has come and gone. There used to be at least one if not more 100 lap late model races every year paying sizeable money but not anymore. When Don Cliburn had it he had a Lucas race there one year and the next two were rained out. Track is now going down bad. D'lo was a fun little track but was never a big time track and Pearl had a backwoods track back in around '80 but thats all jxn has ever had other than the fifties and sixties or so. There's a new big dirt track slated to be open in about a month way down in south Ms called Outlaw Speedway and from a video I've seen it looks nice. I just can't understand why there can't be something like that close to the jxn area.

Didn't Danny Owens have an interest in the Cotton Bowl at some point?

I remember when they built delta bowl and they said if the racing didn't bring you back the food would but the best I remember it wasn't open very long at all and it wasn't very far from the casinos at all I just had the feeling it wasn't promoted right.

I think, in addition to being so far out, as people have said, it was too big a track for weekly shows. Hard on engines. If you think about it, nothing over a 1/4 mile has ever lasted in the mid south.

I'm not in favor of people driving drunk, but there must have been some shady political stuff going out with the track being targeted with the road block.

I just wonder why it couldn't have made it as a special events track. And I bet now, with the Tunica casinos getting their @SS handed to it by Southland's expansion, the powers that be wouldn't look down their nose about a few thousand extra people in the area from time to time.
