Dale McDowell Captures First Magnolia State Cotton Pickin’ 100 Crown
Three-Race Weekend Up Next for Hall of Famer
Mooresburg, Tennessee (09/25/18 ) – After starting 11th on the grid on Saturday night, Dale McDowell piloted his Shane McDowell Racing #17m New Era Industrial/ Will Kinzer Foundation/ Sweet-Bloomquist Chassis/ Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model to the $12,000 victory in the finale of the annual Magnolia State Cotton Pickin’ 100.
The win was far from easy, but marked his first triumph in the storied race. The victory was his seventh of the 2018 campaign.
“We were a little tight,” said McDowell. “(Car owner and brother) Shane (McDowell) and them made some last-minute changes on the car so I could rotate the bottom there. (I) moved out last night and passed kinda in the middle. Tonight, I kinda just stayed around the bottom … tried to take care of my tires and just be patient. That was the biggest thing. I didn’t want to see that last caution with two laps to go, but thankfully everyone worked out well for us. It’s really cool to get a first time win in front of such a great crowd.”
Friday night brought Shane McDowell Racing and Dale McDowell to Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi) for the two-day Magnolia State Cotton Pickin’ 100. Drawing 57 cars for the unsanctioned weekend, Dale advanced three spots in his heat race to place third.
Earning the 13th-starting position for the $4,000-to-win opening night feature, McDowell improved 11 spots in the 30-lapper, reeling in a runner-up finish behind Chris Ferguson with Billy Moyer, Jack Sullivan, and Jason Hiett completing the Top-5 finishers.
The following night, McDowell timed in sixth fastest in his qualifying group before registering a runner-up finish in his heat race behind Brian Rickman. Starting the feature in 11th, Dale caught and passed race-leader Austin Rettig on lap-54 and held the top spot for the ensuing 16 circuits en route to his seventh win of the season and a $12,000 payday.
Rettig, Billy Moyer, Brian Rickman, and Dane Dacus rounded out the Top-5 finishers in the 70-lap affair.
